The Oscar Academy has disqualified Nigeria’s “Lionheart” from the contest
in the Best International Feature Film category.
“Lionheart”
which was directed by Genevieve Nnaji, was disqualified because it violates an
Academy rule that entries in the category must have “a predominantly
non-English dialogue track.”
However
“Lionheart,” in which Nnaji also stars, is partially in the Igbo language of
Nigeria but it is mostly in English
The Academy
announced the disqualification of “Lionheart” to voters in the category in an
email on Monday.
Some Nigerians have, however, taken to their social media handle to share their opinion
see tweets below:
The fact that “Lionheart” is even a conversation, on that level. Mehn, I am proud of @GenevieveNnaji1— Do2dtun Energy gAD (@iamDo2dtun) November 5, 2019
This is the beginning of something big. Now, they will pay more attention to us here

With the disqualification of #Lionheart, I dare say that no Nigerian film will win the award in the near future. Lionheart came to prominence because people outside Nigeria were able to watch and understand it.— Sproutlin 🌱 (@sproutlin) November 5, 2019
Even King of Boys would have been disqualified too
